Experience

I have a passion for learning. I have been a student for all of my remembered life and will continue to be for the rest of it. After graduating next May, I will be pursuing a PhD in Political Science and with it a career of learning and teaching at the university level. That passion for the academic environment and helping others to learn translates to a desire to be a tutor. While my current and past academic information and scores should illustrate my success in the classroom, I feel it is important to stress my aptitude for translating that success into effective tutoring. I am patient and professional and recognize the need to truly understand what parts of an idea a student is struggling with or is hoping to improve. Being a good tutor begins with listening, not just instructing. I am skilled in breaking down topics and building them up in ways that can be easily understood. In this way I can outline major components of a concept and fill in details so that not only the substance of a concept can be grasped, but it's significance and connection to other concepts, as well. Whether it is help on homework, improving reading or writing skills, or test preparation, I am certain that I can help you or your son or daughter improve. Scores: -ACT Scores: 34 Composite (32 English, 34 Math, 34 Reading, 36 Science) -5 on AP US History, US Government, and Environmental Studies Tests. -High School GPA: 4.3/4.0 -High School Class Rank: 7/243 -GRE Scores: 98th Percentile Verbal, 85 Percentile Quantitative, 98th Percentile Analytical Writing Undergraduate Areas of Expertise: -American Government and Politics, Environmental Studies, General Biology, Plant Biology, Statistics, Academic Writing Additional Work Experience: -Two years of experience as a teaching and research assistant in the Department of Political Science at Truman State University where I am responsible for creating quizzes and assignments, grading assignments, managing grades, and assisting with research -9 months in the Missouri government as a full-time legislative intern in the Senate, a speechwriting and research fellow for Supreme Court Judge Mary Rhodes Russell, and an education assistant in the Director's Office of the Department of Natural Resources -One year as the station manager of KTRM-FM where I was responsible for 115 employees and an $8,000 budget as well as leading weekly meetings, management and scheduling of all personnel, training new employees, and ensuring all FCC regulations were learned and followed

Hobbies

I am a laid back person, naturally introverted, but very responsible, passionate, and energetic when it comes to completing tasks with which I am entrusted and excited about. Teaching and learning both fall squarely into that category. I love to laugh and enjoy utilizing humor and a quick wit. Outside of the classroom I can usually be found either outside or with an instrument in my hands. My fiancé Carly and I love backpacking, day hiking, kayaking, and camping. I have been a musician since I was six and am a competent bassist (electric and upright), guitarist, and pianist with experience on the banjo, harmonica, and resonator guitar. I was an all-district jazz bassist in high school and played in quite a few garage bands (of varying quality), as well as in church worship bands. Next year I will begin the journey of attaining a PhD in political science. My research interests involve American politics, the public policy process, legislative and interest group behavior, and the energy and environmental politics of the U.S.
